JC & LC Candidate Video - Important Information

The SEC have migrated to online marking of candidates’ examination answers on a phased basis over the last number of years. They have found this to be a very positive experience for all, including for examiners in the marking of scripts and for Leaving Certificate candidates when it comes to the viewing of scripts.

They have prepared a short video which sets out some very important information to candidates in relation to the completion of their examinations and the video contains key messages for candidates including:

  1. how they should provide key information on the front cover of their answer books that is essential to ensure their scripts are processed accurately and effectively;
  2. and the correct writing instruments that they should use in the examinations to ensure examiners can read their complete scripts.

This video can be found under the heading “Information for Candidates” at: https://www.examinations.ie/?l=en&mc=ex&sc=e23

LC 2023 Confirmation of Entries - Deadline 5pm Tuesday 21st February 2023

It is essential that all candidates register through the Portal as this Portal will provide candidates with the opportunity to confirm that their personal details are correct (i.e. Name and Date of Birth), their subject choice and levels, registration will also allow future access to their results and for the later stages of the process such as the appeals application process.

Click here to login CSSP 2023

The portal opened at 1pm on Wednesday 8 February for candidates to confirm their subject entries and levels. It will remain open for this purpose until 5pm Tuesday 21 February.

Where a candidate has not registered and/or a candidate who registered but did not confirm their subject/level choices through the Candidate Self Service Portal their subject/level options will be defaulted to the subjects/levels entered during the October returns process.

LC 2023 Confirmation of Entries - Important Information for candidates

In 2021, the State Examinations Commission (SEC) as part of its digital strategy, introduced a facility to allow Leaving Certificate candidates to confirm their subject and level entry details online (including adding or withdrawing from subjects), replacing the previous system of using individual Leaving Certificate candidate (E7) entry forms. The use of the online system, the Candidate Self Service Portal (CSSP) will continue for the 2023 Leaving Certificate.

The CSSP will open at 1pm on Wednesday 8 February for candidates to confirm their subject entries and levels. It will remain open for this purpose until 5pm on Tuesday 21 February.

During this time Leaving Certificate candidates will be required to complete the following:

Step 1: Register and create their portal account

Step 2: Activate their account by selecting the link sent to the email that they registered on the portal

Step 3: Confirm their subject and level entry details, and add or delete subjects from the records presented to them.

If applicable, amend any inaccuracy in their name and/or date of birth.

Reviewing and Confirming Subjects and Levels

The portal will be pre-populated with the data entered by schools through the PPOD October returns process (i.e. Names, Date of Births, Subjects & Levels). This means that only those subjects which candidates have been studying in schools will be displayed on the portal.

Candidates will have the opportunity to add any subjects that they are studying outside of school or to delete subjects if they are no longer intending to present for examinations in particular subjects.

It is extremely important that candidates take the time to ensure that their examination entries are correct on the portal before they submit. Once a candidate has confirmed their subjects and levels on the portal they will not be able to log back into the portal to update their data. Candidates will receive a confirmation email outlining the subjects and levels they are entered for. If a candidate notices an error on their confirmation email they must contact the school in relation to the error.

Access to the Portal

Leaving Certificate candidates will access the portal at www.examinations.ie from Wednesday 8 February at 1pm. A CSSP Before You Start Guide 2023 will be provided which candidates should read before commencing the process (note: you can now find this at the bottom of this webpage). To access the portal, candidates will need the following:

  • their examination number
  • Personal Identification Number (PIN). The PIN will be the first 4 digits of the candidate’s Personal Public Services Number (PPS number). In the event that a candidate does not have a PPS number or a PPS was not recorded a unique PIN will be created and issued to the school prior to the portal opening.
  • an email address and mobile phone number to which the candidate will have regular access to over the coming months.

Examination Fees 2023

Arrangements regarding fees for 2023 will be notified at a later stage.

Further information on the 2023 examination process will issue in due course

2022 JC and LC - Important Information regarding Leaving Certificate Appeal Results and Junior Cycle Results

There are two important matters relating to the 2022 certificate examinations to bring to your attention at this time.

1.  Leaving Certificate Appeals Results.

The SEC has not up to now been able to confirm the date for the issue of the appeal results to candidates.  As the appeals process is nearing completion, I can confirm that it is intended that the appeal results will issue through the Candidate Self Service Portal on Friday 7th October at 11am. Candidates awaiting appeal results have been contacted by email today by the SEC informing them of the date results will issue.

2.    Junior Cycle Results

The SEC has a responsibility to examination candidates to ensure that their work is marked to the highest standards of quality and integrity and the Commission must be able to stand over the results it issues each year.

There are a number of significant issues which have impacted the arrangements for the delivery of the Leaving Certificate and Junior Cycle examinations this year which mean that the dates for results are later than they would be in a normal year.

Details of the arrangements for the 2022 certificate examinations were announced on 1 February 2022.  Since that time, the SEC has been engaged in the planning and delivery of all aspects of the examinations across Leaving Certificate, Leaving Certificate Applied and Junior Cycle.  This was a significant undertaking in the current year considering the ongoing effects of Covid-19. Some 131,000 candidates entered to sit the examinations this year, an increase of 6% (+7,000) compared to the last time a full set of examinations was run in 2019.  The requirement for increased numbers of examiners across all subjects especially at Junior Cycle has been especially challenging in the current year.

As in any year, priority is given to the high stakes Leaving Certificate given the importance of these results to candidates as they progress to employment, further education and higher education.  The date for the issue of the Leaving Certificate results of 2 September was later than normal due to a number of factors including the deferred sitting of the Leaving Certificate examinations and the commitment that the outcomes would, on aggregate, be no lower than the outcomes in 2021.  The priority has been processing the Leaving Certificate appeals following the application deadline of 12 September last the results of which will issue on Friday 7th October.

In parallel with the Leaving Certificate appeals, work on the processing of Junior Cycle results has been ongoing, with marking complete in most subjects.  Given the priority afforded to the Leaving Certificate appeals, we are not yet able to provide a date for the issue of the Junior Cycle results.

Every effort will be made by the SEC to issue these results as soon as possible and to provide candidates, parents and schools with certainty about the arrangements for issuing the results in due course.
